TUTORING is a MULTIFACETED PROCESS. IT IS not ABOUT “FIXING” A CHILD OR TARGETING ONE ISSUE. IT IS ABOUT listening TO THE FAMILY AND THE CHILD, AND establishing GOALS SO THAT THERE IS ONGOING FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT.

YOUR CHILD may be STRUGGLING, but WE ARE HERE TO HELP.

  • My child is struggling with reading and writing and has lost confidence. My child would benefit from an individualized, multi-sensory approach to learning.

  • My child is entering Pre-K/Kindergarten and is showing the beginning signs of wanting to learn to read. I want to find someone who can teach my child how to read.

  • My child is reading well but seems to have difficulties with spelling. My child would benefit from a structured approach to spelling.

  • I am worried my child will fall further behind, lack even more self-confidence, and become unwilling to take academic risks.

YOU WANT SOMEONE who IS…

  • A great communicator

  • Dependable

  • Relatable

  • Engaging

  • An experienced and competent educator

You want a tutor who is going to understand your child as a person and as a learner and who will become a partner in your family’s learning journey. You want someone who will help build upon your child’s strengths, and provide strategies for the areas that need to be strengthened within an environment that encourages independence and responsibility.

WE specialize IN

+ MULTIFACEDTED APPROACH TO LEARNING

All sessions are designed to support social-emotional learning and to build a child’s confidence in any given area. LG Tutors also specialize in supporting children with their executive functioning skills. These skills are the mental processes that enable us to plan, focus attention, remember instructions, and multi-task. LG Tutors help teach students how to organize, plan, manage time, maintain focus, self-assess, and study efficiently. Children are not born with these skills—they are born with the potential to develop them.

+ LITERACY INTERVENTION

Orton-Gillingham Approach

LG Tutors are trained in an Orton-Gillingham approach to reading, writing and spelling. Orton–Gillingham is a teaching approach that was designed to help struggling readers and writers. It explicitly teaches the connections between letters and sounds. Most of our students benefit from the use of its multi-sensory techniques. This means that tutors use sight, hearing, touch, and movement to help students connect language with letters and words. Many students use different modalities to learn effectively. As students progress in their ability to decode and encode words, more advanced word study approaches are utilized. Some of these include prefixes and suffixes and other strategies to figure out the meanings of words. Each tutor utilizes varying techniques to develop an educational plan and lessons that are tailored to your child's individual needs. LG Tutors are trained to meet students where they are in terms of their present levels of performance.

Comprehension

Students who have already mastered their decoding skills often require practice in the area of comprehension. LG Tutors help select appropriate books and texts to motivate and engage readers. LG Tutors help build skills and strategies to create independent readers which helps build confidence for them to engage and progress from learning to read to reading to learn.

Writing Support

LG tutors help students build a foundation of skills and strategies needed to become competent and confident writers. Students need structured support to understand how to respond to reading, write personal narratives, non-fiction, opinion and persuasive genres.

+ MATH SUPPORT

LG Tutors focus on building number sense and foundational skills to support computation and problem-solving. Students benefit from the use of multi-sensory strategies and techniques. LG Tutors use manipulatives, hands-on activities to support their learning. LG Tutors have worked with math programs including: Investigations in Number, Data, and Space; Singapore Math, Bridges in Mathematics, Everyday Mathematics and more. Tutors will support any program a child is using in school, while bringing in supplemental materials, games, and resources to further enhance their learning. Previously learned skills and concepts are continuously reinforced even as new skills are introduced.

+ EARLY LITERACY AND KINDERGARTEN PREPAREDNESS

LG Tutors help students prior to Kindergarten build a solid foundation of early literacy skills. Many of our youngest students are showing interest in learning how to read. Tutors work on letter recognition, phonological awareness, and letter formation to help children begin their journey as readers and writers.
